The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
